January 4, 2016 - Workshop on the Social Economy, Entrepreneurship and Altruism

Monday, January 4, 2016 - 1.30 pm - location: R42.2.107

More and more people are aware of the limits of the capitalist economy, which should not be confused with a market-driven, entrepreneurial economy. Other forms of economic cooperation, business, entrepreneurship and collaboration are widely practiced. Even when they are not dominant in the economy, they allow people to give meaning to their lives, create value for their community and give people the opportunity to contribute to objectives that go beyond self-interest and profit maximization. The workshop will discuss new research on the broad topic of a social economy as a means of people to contribute to better societies.

Program
1.30 pm Introduction by the Dean, prof. Bruno van Pottelsberghe
1.35 pm "Alternative Enterprise and Sustainable Prosperity" Prof. Fergus Lyon, Middlesex University
2.15 pm "Solidarity taken Hostage" Prof. An Ansoms, UCL
3.00 pm "Are Universal and Parochial Altruism substitutes or complements? A natural experiment in Flanders (Belgium)" Prof. Philip Verwimp, Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management
3.45 pm Coffee Break
4 pm "Micro-entrepreneurs in Rural Burundi: Innovation and Contestation and the Bottom of the Pyramid" Public Defense of the doctoral dissertation of Katarzyna Cieslik
Reception

The workshop is generously funded by the Marie and Alain Philippson Chair in Sustainable Human Development. Participation is free of charge but you need to register your attendance by email to Aurélie Rousseaux, aurelie [dot] rousseaux [at] ulb [dot] ac [dot] be before December 18.
