Bram De Rock wins prestigious ERC starting grant
Professor Bram De Rock was awarded a starting grant from the
European Research Council for his project "A revealed preference analysis of household consumption models".
The project focuses on the consumption decisions of multi-person households by taking into account that each person can have different preferences and enters therefore in a decision process with the other members. The project relies on an innovative and robust technique, called revealed preferences, to develop and compare several household consumption models. Bram is the only economist in Belgium to receive such a grant this year.

The Big Move!
SBS-EM's new building
In September 2010, the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management moves into its brand new headquarters. A much anticipated event, many years in the making…
The new home of the SBS-EM is standing tall on one of the most prestigious avenues of Brussels. It will, from now on, act as a daring symbol of the school’s prestige and its ambitions for the future. The brief was simple: high-tech equipment, bold design and open to the outside world. The result? 10.000 m² and 5 storeys of interacting spaces, a state-of-the-art architecture finally giving the school the bite to match its bark.

MBA Solvay Global Women’s Network
Last week Sidsel Graee, Managing Partner of SAM International and MBA Solvay alumnus, gave to students and alumni a great insight of the headhunter industry. She explained how to work with headhunters, what motivated her to become one and how her organization SAM works.
Sindsel started her international career as a member of the international student organization AIESC. Following a master in Economics, she worked with various international companies and became Vice President of Business Development of EMEA for Time Manager International in Geneva. Mother of two, she enrolled in the Solvay MBA program after moving to Brussels in 1998. Sidsel worked as an independent management consultant before starting up SAM Headhunting in Belgium in 2006.
Sidsel took the magic out of headhunting, explaining to an audience of 30+ alumni and students, what headhunting is all about, the advantages of headhunters for companies and why she choose a career in headhunting. She also explained how candidates can use headhunters, with tips on how to react when approached by a headhunter, closing her talk with an update on how the financial crisis is shifting the needs of clients and candidates.
The event was organized by the MBA Solvay Global Women’s network, which was founded in 2008 and has quickly grown to 90 members. The network holds similar speaker-events every two months and distinguished speakers from past events include the Canadian Ambassadress and the CTO of the BBC. Events are of general interest and free to Business School students and SBS alumni.
The vision of the network is to cultivate a global network of women leaders in business, and its mission to develop and strengthen an MBASolvay women's business network, to inspire and learn from one another's experiences and to support and propel each other towards success.
It’s values are following the EMERGE theme, of Expanding our business women’s network, Model our future, Ethics for a new business culture, Respect for diversity, Grow women leaders in business and Empower our aspirations.
The MBA Solvay Global Women’s network is always open to suggestions for speakers and we welcome volunteers to come forward with ideas and to help us organize events. Our future events are advertised in SBSAlumni, mySBS, http://www.mbasolvay.net/ and at http://mbasolvaywomen.collectivex.com

Thanks to this, Manneken Pis’ wardrobe boasts an array of uniforms, outfits and foreign traditional costumes, all of which can be viewed in a museum at the Grand Place. As a bonus he "pees" beer on the days that his costume is changed. Many of his costumes were donated by government officials. His first costume was donated by King Louis XV of France in 1747.
MBASolvay’s 2008 graduating class have prepared a special costume for him. The toga and the cap were exact replicas of the ones MBASolvay graduates were wearing at the Graduation Ceremony that was held in the Brussels Stock Exchange at the same day.
In his speech Mr Thielemans pointed out that he was proud to receive on the name of Mannekin Pis his new 808th costume and he promised to the MBASolvay 2008 graduates and guests that this occasion will not be the last one for Manneken Pis to wear his MBASolvay Graduating outfit. The mayor of Brussels awarded the Solvay Business School MBASolvay Programme an ‘Honours Diploma’ as a friend of Mannekin Pis.
