Integrative Courses

1-year participants are required to participate in the International Business Field Project (IBFP).

2-year participants need to make a choice between the Entrepreneurship/Business Planning course and the Applied Corporate Strategy Seminar.

The International Business Field Project is a challenging consulting project carried out by a small team of MBA participants working to solve a real-life business issue brought to us by international companies. Participants are assigned a project, ranging in subject from capital financing to product launching, business strategy to product chain management, etc. Participants then define the detailed objectives and planning in accordance with the client and the School Faculty. It is a unique opportunity to showcase participants’ talents to potential recruiters, and offers participants a real-life arena in which to strengthen and consolidate their skills.

The Business Planning course provides participants with the essential skills necessary to deal with discovery, evaluation and exploitation of opportunities. It sheds light on the three pillars of the entrepreneurial process: the opportunity, the team and the resources. Specific attention is devoted to the business planning process as a best practice to prepare an entrepreneurial venture.

The Applied Corporate Strategy Seminar gives the opportunity of applying the knowledge gained in courses (in strategy as well as in specialized subjects) by preparing a report and making a presentation on a specific strategic issue involving the organization he/she works for. This organization may be a corporation or a public sector entity or a non-profit entity. Each student will choose a topic, in agreement with the faculty member in charge of this seminar, which must also be approved by the organization he/she works for.

It is advisable to note that such cases are rare.

MBA Solvay follows a strict admission policy to ensure a constant standard of high calibre participants. Applicants are required to have significant and valuable work experience; an outstanding academic record; proficiency in business English; a desire to work in an international environment and openness for diversity, professional ambition and leadership skills coupled with the ability to work under stress.

We aim to create a community of participants that would contribute to the diversity and uniqueness of the MBA programme. • Do my references have to come from my current company?
We prefer at least one recommendation to be sent from your workplace: your current supervisor or manager may be a good choice. The other recommendation shoud be from someone who has had a chance to evaluate you in a professional setting: a client, a former supervisor, etc. If you have a particularly insightful academic recommendation, please feel free to submit it. However, it is better to have a professional relation with the referee as we expect to have an idea about managerial aptitudes and your potential for senior management.
  • Do you require any languages other than English to qualify for entry to the Programme?
Our MBA programme is in English; therefore no other language than English is required.
  • How can I submit my English Proficiency test results?
If you have taken a TOEFL and/or IELTS test, the results should be sent by these organisations directly to Solvay Brussels School.  These tests are not compulsory, while GMAT or GRE are.
  • Although English is not my native tongue, I've lived and worked in an English speaking country for many years. Am I still required to take a TOEFL/IELTS?
Candidates are expected to have a good level of English in order to be able to perform well in the programme. Therefore, if you have proof that you studied and/or worked in English for many years and you can be exempt from an English Proficiency test. However, MBA Solvay reserves the right to ask  to take an English proficiency test, if the admission board requires it.
  • Will you consider my application if I have not yet taken my GMAT or GRE or TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS/Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)?
An applicant is considered for admission when all the requirements are fulfilled and all the documents are complete.
  • How soon will I receive a decision? And how is it going to be communicated?
Within a week after we receive your completed application file the Admission Committee makes a decision and candidates are informed. The decision of the Admission Committee will be communicated to the applicant by the Admissions Manager either by mail or e-mail.

VISA, PERMITS, LIVING IN BRUXELLES

  • What are the required steps in order to get a visa for Belgium? Each Country has different rules so we advise you to contact the local Consulate in your country. Some examples here. Students from the USA: send all the documents to the corresponding consulate, then you will be called for an interview. After 3 weeks you should receive your passport with the visa. Students from Brazil: contact the Belgian Consulate in São Paulo, Brazil http://bit.ly/WLeLEG. Students from India: The website you can refer to (example for Kerala): http://www.vfs-be-in.com/ Previous students from India gave the advice to not approach any agent as it is more costly and time consuming. It is more efficient to do it by yourself.

  • If I would like to apply for a Belgian residence card, which advice could you give for the procedure? It can be a long procedure since the communes are generally quite busy. Please note that not speaking any French can be a barrier. Hence, it is an advantage if you can ask somebody to come with you who speaks French. The procedure - Step 1: Find a place to stay and get the house contract. The postal code of your new address indicates to which commune you have to go. For further information about your commune: http://www.brussels.irisnet.be/about-the-region/the-communes-of-the-region Step 2: Present yourself at the corresponding commune (the earlier in the morning you go there the better and take a lot of time into account) bringing your passport and house contract with you. Step 3: label your door bell and post box with your name for police verification. Step 4: the police will visit you and leave you a letter (stating the next date and time of appointment to commune) in your letter box. The date of appointment can be 1 month after the date you received the police letter. The letter also specifies the required documents to be taken along during the appointment). Step 5: Present yourself again at the commune at the time and date specified on the police verification letter with the relevant documents: house contract, university letter; 2 photographs of required size, €40, police letter, passport copy etc. Step 6: Wait for 7-21 days for a letter to arrive from the commune stating your PIN and PUK number Step 7: Go to commune with this letter and the person at the counter would activate your resident card with this PIN and PUK number and finally provide you with the resident card.

  • If I would like to follow a French class in Brussels, where can I do that and how much does it cost?

CVO, which is close to the VUB: http://www.cvo-khnb.net/en/indexen.htm FEE: €92 or €138 depending on frequency

    http://www.cvo-khnb.net/en/prijs.htm ADDRESS: C.V.O.- K.H.N.B. Vrije Universiteit Brussel

EPFC, close to ULB Prices: from 89.48 € per period http://www.epfc.eu/index.html?page=173

  • What is the average living cost in Brussels for MBA participants?

This depends on your living standards. At the minimum, assuming you have shared student’s accommodation and do your groceries at discount stores you may need 500-600 euro /month for food, accommodation, travel etc. This is quite a low calculation; it’s better to calculate at least 800 euro per month.

  • Do prices differ between grocery stores in Belgium? If yes, which stores offer the best prices and where can I find international products? The most expensive ones are the stores which are open very late or on Sunday’s, like e.g.; Carrefour Express or Delhaize Shop’n’Go and the “Night Shops”. Generally, Delhaize is considered one of the most expensive; GB Carrefour is in the middle, while Colruyt, Aldi and Lidl are one of the cheapest. CORA has a very good selection and relatively low prices for their fish products. Asian products can be found close to de Brouckere in the City center. There is a huge grocery store offering a wide range of products. On Saturdays and Sundays you have vegetable markets in many quarters of Brussels, where you can get fresh products at better prices. The market at Gare du midi is one of the biggest ones.
